Hey Jessi...It feels like a Party everyday!

"It feels like a party everyday...Hey Jessi"
My name is Jessi Crippin. I am the wife of the most wonderful man, Kris and mom to the cutest kid ever, Hardin. When Kris and I were married we moved to Louisiana. A few months after moving to The Pelican State, I was blessed to have the opportunity to teach at Calvary Baptist School in Slidell. I can honestly say I loved everyday working there. I loved my job. I loved getting up to go teach "my kids." I loved the people I worked with. I just loved it!!!! Don't get me wrong there were some not great moments, but when you are doing what you are created for, those moments are just passing. I did learn a great deal from those unpleasant snap shots of time. They taught me lessons on communication. I taught there for almost four years.
I love doing a weekly newsletter. This helps the parents know what is going on in the classroom as well students homework for the next week. I don't like giving a lot of homework, because I know their parents want to spend time with them...not being up all night doing homework. I like making binders for them at the beginning of the year. It has all the policies and procedures in it as well as space for notes, homework, and taking things home. This helps them to stay neat and organized.
We have fun in my classroom. One of my kids told me once, "Mrs. C you make school not so bad." I guess I'll take that :-). The most important thing is I am teaching them to think. I want them to use their brains for more than just memorization. I want them to think for themselves, to think creatively and to use their imagination. When their brains are being used in such ways is when they learn the most.

A State You Can Really Sink Your Teeth In

We made edible physicals map of Louisiana. The kids LOVED IT!

What you need:
tortillas( your state)
twizzlers (rivers)
chocolate chips (mountains)
blue sprinkles (lakes)
sprinkles(for land)
icing (for glue)

It's a lot easier in the long run and less mess if you put all the ingredients  in different individual baggies. It took me maybe 30 -40 minutes to put everything in baggies and maybe 20 minutes to cut out the state on to the tortillas.

Super, Simple, and Fun

So I saw this fraction activity on www.lessonplansos.blogspot.com Since I live right outside of NOLA and we are ALL ABOUT OUR SAINTS, I decided to do this with football. It just so happened that today we started fractions and it was Saints day here at CBS.

So I made my own little spin:

I took four pieces of crumpled up brown paper (for footballs)
Made a Jersey
Took a paper plate and drew a target on it
The kids had four tries to be Drew Brees and hit Colston's hands.
They then wrote their denominator (which has to be said in a Governor of California way) which is four. Then they threw the footballs at the paper plate and wrote their numerator (which is said in a high pitch voice because it's on top), the number of times they hit the target.
Then from there we figured out their "completion" rate...in percentages.

Of course we called it SUPER SAINTS FRACTION FOOTBALL

Pumpkin Patch Report

Last year my little cousins who live in SOUTH CAROLINA, did this adorable little project. They had to read a book, write a report, and then paint/decorate the pumpkin to represent the main character or the book its self. I searched high and low and trying to come up with how to make this happen for my class. A report couldn't seem  to be found. So I hodge podge one together. The whole school ended up doing it so I made it somewhat suitable for all grade levels.
Pumpkin Report
Next year it will be harder. I just want to see how this year turns out :-)

Why???

I love finding cute things that help me to become a better teacher. This year when trying to set up my binder I was looking for those things to make it special. I came across many wonderful ideas. But I ran into a problem. They are all public school teachers blogs and they do things a bit differently then we do them. So I am blogging to help those who need that little variation on things, such a my self :-).
